Texti #34: Friend.com & Figure 02

Today we talk about how people prepare themselves for loneliness. Both of these approaches are pretty different but they have 1 thing in common, a mind that can judge you. So let's get into them.

The highlights of the week:

  1. โ€‹Friend.com - The only friend you need, and it's not imaginary...
A hot take on a new AI device, that looks like a necklace and has a button, a mic, a led, is water proof and is paired with your phone. It pretends to be your virtual friend.
  2. โ€‹Figure.ai - the iRobot company, they should definitely contact Will Smith for a marketing campaign.
They released a new teaser, and it looks like iRobot is as close to reality as it gets.

โ€‹Friend.com - not imaginary...

Not imaginary... that is the world we live in, who gave 3 year old boy money for a startup?

Okay for real, this is a startup that makes a device, that you wear on your neck, and talks to you, and pretends to be your friend ๐Ÿ˜ณ. Let that sink in for a moment.

Modern paradox, you can buy yourself a friend for 100$ but you can't buy a beer to a random guy in a bar and have a chat with him ๐Ÿคท, if you're in the market for one of these, please consider talking to a therapist, maybe.

Anyways, back to the company and the founder. The company was founded by Avi Schiffmann, a 21 year old guy from Seattle, USA. He raised $2.5Million and he spent about 72% of the budget on the domain name. Yes you read that right, $1.8Million went to purchase friend.com. That's an insane amount, yet again, this is the best marketing campaign you could've ever dreamt of.

Curious if is he pulling an Elon Musk move here, where he does something dumb, and everybody talks about him and his company. Or is he just stupid? We'll see what comes out of it eventually.

Now about the device, not much is know about it, it was just announced, but from the ad we can distinguish a couple of things. See it bellow:

We can see that the device roasts you, even if you actually have friends, and honestly nobody even asks it's opinion. Also a bit confusing how the hell does it see that I'm outside ๐ŸŒ„, playing a video game ๐ŸŽฎ, or eating a dank falafel ๐Ÿง†. By the looks of it, no camera is visible... So I'll just assume it's marketing.

In terms of security this is almost the perfect human tracker, it even looks like an Apple Tag ๐Ÿ˜…. It has a microphone ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ - to hear you talk, a gps tracker ๐Ÿ“ (likely from your phone) - to understand you're outside or not, a battery ๐Ÿ”‹ that should last for a long time, an internet connection ๐Ÿ›œ to process and answer your AI requests.

Remember this is a company in it's incipiency, it has no proven record that it can store safely your private data and the information about you. We literally don't know anything about them. So I'd be careful to order one of these for myself. I'd rather wait until MKBHD roasts it and kills the company ๐Ÿชฆ.

One more thing, I know that the world we live in, can be a bit sad, grumpy and unfriendly place. However AI is not answer to a social problem. You will find always more sympathy in and respect in another human. We are ultimately social by nature. If you have problems finding yourself a friend, please visit a doctor or talk to a therapist, if that's too much, fee free to write me a message on Twitter or even reply to this email.

โ€‹Figure.ai - v02

I know, you're wondering where is v01? I don't know either... But the trailer for v02 is out ๐ŸŽ‰ and if something related to AI and Robots - then count me in!

The teaser doesn't provide a lot of information or explanation about the robot, however we can see some torque specs, rotation angles and even the complex construction of the rotation mechanism.

Robots are complex mechanisms, that could potentially be a friend that will at least interact with you. Obviously Figure.ai didn't raise only $2.5Million to build this, they raised hundred of millions and their valuation is somewhere around $2.6Billion.

Figure have previously demoed us, how their robot interacts with household utilities and how it can clean the kitchen. I think I haven't covered in the a newsletter block, is that they collaborated with BMW, and put the robot to work in the car assembly process. You can see this hereโ€‹

Anyways, I would definitely buy one if I had the chance. I mean imagine if I could just simply delegate all my adult responsibilities to a robot ๐Ÿค–. Just imagine, having somebody clean up all the mess all the time, and be able to do all the adult responsibilities for you! ๐Ÿ˜„

Final words

If you're not convinced we live in the future after today, I'm not sure what will convince you. We are on the second iteration of a humanoid robot that is meant to help people ๐Ÿคฏ. We are in the future! ๐Ÿš€

That's it folks, see you next week โค๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ

Happy Prompting!
