Since the boom of AI everybody started talking about OpenAI, and that’s for a reason, actually for multiple reasons, but today we’ll focus on the recent points. OpenAI raised another 40 Billion in investment 🤯raising it’s valuation to 300 Billion, they released a new really good image generation model, their new GPT 4.5 model for the first time in human history passed the turing test, and finally a company with Open in their name promised to release an Open model!
Extremely exciting news today, let’s dive in:
The 40 Billion question, how in hell can you raise 40 Billion as a startup? Well, to answer this question we need to understand what OpenAI is. OpenAI is rumoured to have about 400Million customers (we can only guess, as there’s nothing open about this company really 😅), anyways with a user base of about 400 Million customers, it puts it the top of the AI chain, that is what SoftBank invested in. They have previously fucked up and invested in similar bubble startup called WeWork, but that was a hysteria created by a single man, now this is hysteria created by an entire world, so Soft Bank does really want to believe their investment is going to pay out.
Just to recap on this, a private company producing top of the class AI algorithms is now valued at 300 Billion. This number doesn’t really mean anything without perspective so I’ll try to explain a bit.
Coca-Cola is valued at 300B and this is the 24th most valuable company in the USA! OpenAI is now higher valued than companies like, T-Mobile, Bank of America, McDonald’s, IBM, American Express, Morgan Stanley, Walt Disney, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup (bank), Boeing, Intel, UPS, PayPal, Ford, General Motors, etc. There are only 24 companies in the USA that have a higher value than OpenAI, only 24! 🤯
In my personal opinion, value vs what it produces, this company is nothing other than a bubble, it is a private company, without any kind of profit, without anything but a promise. A record valuation. Watching this in perspective of competition and for solutions that are 10x cheaper providing similar results this to me sounds nothing but nuts. I’m sorry but there must be a correction here and softbank will burn here real bad IMO. Let’s see how this is going to play out. We’re all just witnesses to a crazy and interesting event that happens really once in a life-time. The last event of this size was the dot-com bubble. Enjoy the ride.
I guess as a consolation prize for this round of investment, they announced that they will finally release an open model. Finally, a company with OPEN in it’s name decided to do something that is open. There are no details on it, but it was announced on twitter, so well, let’s see how this goes.
Now something that is somewhat real and is ahead of the competition. OpenAI Image generation. OpenAI has launched a new image gen that really makes the rest look like a child’s play. The details and image quality is incredible. I’m sure you’ve already seen a bunch of Studio Ghibli examples, as that went really viral, and the funniest thing is that, Nizou Yamamoto (Studio Ghibli signature artist) has always hated the AI art, probably that’s why this trend went viral.
Anyways, OpenAI has taken a completely different approach to image generation, it’s not fast by any means, but it really self-adjusts and adjust itself so well that from seemingly a weird and stupid request it makes something marvelous.

People are evil though, so one of the most common example I’ve seen of chat-gpt image generation was a rental company trying to charge a customer for damage that does not exist 😢

Yet if you take a closer look, you can see that the image is cartoon-ish, and it’s not real, that said this is just the current state, and in the future I’m afraid things like this are imminent. So probably handing over rentals is going to be a little more annoying.
Lastly, the more significant event that happened this week actually was that OpenAI’s GPT 4.5 finally passed the Turing Test, which means that humans were finally unable to distinguish if they were talking to a human or a machine. This was also meant to be a final test to determine if the machines are human or not. History was made these days, and all of us are here to see it happen in broad day-light.
